We are a sports-loving family. Kara grew up on the courts, always cheering from the sidelines. Dad coached my AAU basketball team, and she never missed a game. She also spent countless hours watching me play tennis tournaments. We were always a little nervous about how she’d handle the long days, but she loved watching the competition and being part of the excitement.
This Sunday, we ventured to Carver Hawkeye Arena to watch the women take on Purdue. From the moment we walked through the doors, Kara’s light was beaming. She grabbed my arm and said, “I love this! Thank you for taking me.” My heart melted—her gratitude is so pure and sincere, and moments like this remind me how special she is.
Of course, no trip to the arena is complete without a new T-shirt. Kara picked one out that’s a little too big, but she insisted on it because it was black with a big Hawkeye logo—just like the shirt she picked for Dad for Christmas. Who cares if it’s too big? If she loves it, I’ll get it.
At the concession stand, she settled on cheese pizza after we couldn’t find a cheeseburger. I felt like I’d let her down, but she reassured me, “Pizza is totally fine.” Usually the food decisions are not negotiable, I was relieved that this wasn’t a big disappointment to her.
We weren’t in our seats when the team came out and the band started playing the fight song. Kara immediately wanted to find Dad because she wanted to share that moment with him and she loves hearing him yell, “Go Hawks!” Her face lit up, and for a few hours, everything felt right in the world.
Since her diagnosis, everything has felt so heavy. As we await the results of her PET scan, I’ve been sick with worry. But these moments at CHA - were sweet, simple, and full of joy. I’m so grateful for another day spent with Kara, cheering on the Hawkeyes and taking in her light.
