Sisters at heart

Kara got an iPhone for her birthday last November, and while she’s a social butterfly who loves getting messages and calls from so many friends, there’s one person that lights her up like no other, her niece Alexa. They FaceTime nearly every single day.

Her enthusiasm over a call from Lex makes us wonder if it’s Alexa’s high energy, the way she can rattle on for extended stretches knowing exactly how to entertain Kara, or maybe it’s baby Arielle or Kai that Kara loves keeping tabs on. All of that plays a part but I also know there’s something deeper.

Alexa didn’t just come over to our house to play, she grew up in this home alongside Kara. With their close ages, nights spent under the same roof, mornings of getting ready for school together, they became more like sisters than aunt and niece. That bond has always been unshakable.

Today Alexa turns 27, and it’s hard to believe. She’s a single mom, raising two kids and building a life in Chicago. If I were in her shoes, I’m not sure I could survive but she thrives with courage and level of strength that is so fierce. And no matter what she’s juggling, when Kara calls, Alexa answers.

Earlier this week Kara called Alexa to debut her new look. Alexa was strapping the baby into the car seat after a grocery run, but she picked up. And when she saw Kara, she started to cry, something she rarely shows. It was raw, unexpected and a reminder of how deep this love runs.

Part of what makes Alexa such a good mother today is how naturally she cared for Kara growing up. She learned early what it meant to watch out for someone, to show up consistently, to love with patience and playfulness. Those lessons didn’t just shape their bond, they shaped the kind of mother she is now.

So today, we celebrate Alexa. Not just because it’s her birthday but because she is family, an anchor and someone who makes the world brighter for Kara. Happy 27th, Lex. We love you endlessly.

If You're New Here

Hi, I’m Alisha, Kara’s sister and biggest advocate. Kara was diagnosed with Stage 4 Triple-Negative Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (TNBC) in December 2024. Her cancer has spread to her bones, liver, and other areas, making this an incredibly difficult and uncertain journey.

Despite it all, Kara’s light still shines so brightly. She’s full of love, giggles, and endless positivity. This blog is where I share updates on her fight, the highs and lows and the incredible community rallying around her.

Thank you for being here, for your love, support and prayers. We need them more than ever. 💛 And of course, Go Hawks!
